A bold hand-painted floor by James Allan Smith, in black and tan with touches of cream and blue, crisply underlines Gary Crain’s summer porch in Southampton. Crain used pure white canvas as a canopy to protect against the elements and at the same time succeeded in softening the feeling underneath.
